Seattle University, or SU for short, is a Jesuit Catholic university located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, which is the largest city in the Pacific Northwest and in the US state of Washington, as well as the northernmost major city in the continental United States, having a population of more than 600 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2009 census. Seattle is also the county seat of King County and the center of the Seattle–Tacoma–Bellevue metropolitan statistical area, which is the 15th largest in USA and the largest in the northwestern United States.
SU was established in 1891, by Fathers Victor Garrand, S.J., and Adrian Sweere, S.J., being originally named after the surrounding Immaculate Conception parish, being named Seattle College, in 1898, after both the city and Chief Seattle, adopting its current name in 1948. Today, SU is the largest independent university in the Northwest, having an enrollment estimated at a number of more than 7,500 students, the institution offering 61 bachelor's degree programs, 31 graduate degree programs and 27 certificate programs, including a law school and a doctoral program in education, through 8 colleges, which include: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education, Matteo Ricci College and the College of Science and Engineering.
Seattle's athletic teams are known as the Seattle Redhawks, who compete in NCAA Division I, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, golf, soccer, tennis, track & field, volleyball and cross country. The Redhawks' mascot is Rudy the Redhawk and their distinctive colors are red and white.
